Aviva & Goji Berries

I'm not one to enjoy getting ripped off - so when I hear about someone getting ripped off by a company that claims to be helping with wellness, I get a little determined to assist....in a positive way, of course! It fuels me to seek out what is right and ensure all of the information a person needs is there so the best decision can be made.

I also love research so please bear that in mind.

When the new 'health conscious' store, Aviva opened up in a city near me (Winnipeg), I was really gung-ho to get there and see what phenomenal items they could provide me for wellness.

Hubby and I made a point of stopping in on a trip to get supplies one day and what we found almost made us cry.

The screenshot above is from the website Aviva has set up online. It's beautiful! The items and products they sell are great items and products. The problem is the prices. Us 'regular folk' may be able to (barely) afford to shop there, but it is the getting screwed over that we take issue with.

We were on the hunt for one item in particular that day. When we first started our journey from weakness to wellness, we had found out about Goji berries. Now, we had never ever heard of this food before so we were quite shocked when we researched the berry and discovered a few key factors in why we would choose to add it to our diets.

Some facts on Goji berries;

*They are filled with antioxidants
*Cholesterol lowering
*Rich in Vitamin A (think anti-aging)
*Boosts immune function
*Protects vision
*Prevents disease - it has more Vitamin C than oranges
*They help with weight control (metabolism)

Alright, so we determined that Goji berries are good for us. We had been having trouble locating this supposed superfood, but we never gave up. When the Aviva store opened, we went in with the specific task of finding the Goji.

As we got into the store, I saw the shelf of red across the store. it was magical! A new discovery was about to be made and it was us making it..........and then I saw the price.

Goji berries were $34.99 a POUND?!?

My mind reeled. I wouldn't be buying these Goji berries today. Not here. I even went home and checked the website. It was true. I shook my head as I saw the cost and curse words started to fall out of my head.

$34.99 a pound is insanity!

We defiantly refused to pay for anything Aviva was selling, but a quick glance around the store told me it was a high end big business type of venture (as most are these days). I must admit I kind of pouted. I had been really looking forward to trying what we had been reading about.

We haven't returned to Aviva since.

I tucked the incident away for a few years - there was no point to me to mention it again - we simply refused to shop there. We later found a great place to buy the same Goji's (I'll share this at the end of the post) - and we now pay only $8 a pound.

There is no difference in the berry itself besides the price. Shame on Aviva!

Now, I put it out of my mind - but it is so interesting how things come back to visit sometimes. I was grocery shopping a few days ago when I ran into a friend. We started chatting and the subject of Goji berries came up. She explained that her family didn't want to stop eating them, but they couldn't afford to buy them at the price they were paying.

Confused, I asked where the heck she could be getting her Goji berries from.....and as she spoke the words (Aviva) - it all came back to me. I immediately explained where to get them at a great price and she was off!

How senseless to charge that much for something unless your motive is extreme profit - so I vowed to tell my Aviva story to others. now you've heard it.

Always search around - ask questions - find the best deal for you.

So, we shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada - and there are several great places to get Goji berries, but the best we have discovered is a place called Sun-Wah Supermarket.

The geographical details are:

Instead of focusing on the overpriced Aviva products, head down to Sun-Wah Supermarket and check out the incredible Chinese Pharmacy they have. We buy so many items from there - including Goji berries. At $8 a pound, not only can you really enjoy them but you can feel good that you didn't have to take a loan out just to get them.

Sun-Wah. You're going to love them!
