Meet Severn Suzuki.
The words this young lady speaks will ring true until we all do something together.
Human beings can't seem to get it together enough to progress with real positive changes this planet needs and we continue to watch as the world caves in on itself. This video was filmed in 1992 -I was 20 years old at the time and don't recall ever seeing this. How many of us realize that this was over 20 years ago?
The message about the state of our world is even more dire these days (if someone were to wonder about my opinion) - but I think this 13 year old did an incredible job of getting the point across back then. I just wish folks would have listened. In fact, when you watch this speech, note the way the adults are sitting....reacting....are we being taken seriously?
Severn Suzuki - daughter of Canadian environmentalist and scientist David Suzuki.
A longtime activist for ‘intergenerational justice’, Severn founded the Environmental Children’s Organization with friends at nine years old, which culminated in her speech to the UN at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 when she was twelve.
Severn is an Earth Charter Commissioner (earthcharterinaction.org), and she and the Skyfish Project brought the ‘Recognition of Responsibility’ pledge to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg 2002.
Severn has participated in three speaking tours in Japan with the Namakemono Club. Severn is an Action Canada Fellow (‘04-‘05), has published several books in Japan, and is a co-editor and contributor for the book Notes from Canada’s Young Activists (Greystone books, 2007).
She holds a B.Sc. in Biology from Yale University and an M.Sc. in Ethnoecology from the University of Victoria, where she studied with elders from the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations. Severn lives on the archipelago of Haida Gwaii off the coast of British Columbia where she is studying the Haida language with her husband and two sons.
This speech took less than 5 minutes to give and said it all.
Severn continues to advocate across the globe.
There is no greater feeling than knowing we are safe - our wellness depends on this balance we have between....well....everything!
Be the change you wish to see in the world.....or we won't have a world to call home.
